Four /8 Blocks Allocated to the RIRs

Re-posted from the arin-announce mailing list:

Today, 30 November 2010, the IANA allocated four /8s to the RIRs – 23/8 and 100/8 to ARIN and 5/8 and 37/8 to RIPE NCC. This leaves only seven /8s remaining in IANA free pool of IPv4 addresses, or 2.73% of the total.

When the IANA IPv4 free pool has only five /8 blocks remaining, they will be simultaneously distributed to the five RIRs in accordance with global policy. This means that only two blocks remain to be handed out under the normal distribution method.

With so little IPv4 address space left in the global free pool, ARIN continues to emphasize the need for all Internet stakeholders to adopt the next generation of Internet Protocol, IPv6.

Visit https://www.arin.net/knowledge/v4-v6.html for more information on IPv6 adoption, or contact us at info@arin.net with any questions.

Regards,

Communications and Member Services
American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN)

As to what we, Roller Network, are doing:

  • All of our hosting services (dedicated servers, colocation, etc.) already have dual-stack native IPv6 available.
  • All of our DNS services are accessible over IPv6.
  • Our outbound mail (submission, smarthost) accepts connections and can send to other IPv6 enabled MTAs.
  • Our hosted mail boxes (IMAP, POP3) are accessable via IPv6.
  • Our internet access services in Reno (metro Ethernet, fixed wireless) are dual-stack IPv6 native.

AfriNIC gets 105/8

It looks like AfriNIC was given a /8 earlier than expected; previously they were estimated to request an /8 in 2011. ARIN is rumored to request two /8’s shortly as well before the end of 2010.

As we like to keep mentioning, Roller Network offers an IPv6 enabled network. We are also continuing to diligently work on enabling incoming IPv6 SMTP for our primary mail service. Many of our other services (DNS, outbound mail, hosted mail, colocation) are already IPv6 enabled.

IANA Free Pool Down to 12, Are You Ready for IPv6?

As of October 2010 the IANA has allocated 36/8 and 42/8 to APNIC, leaving only 12 /8s left in the IPv4 free pool. So far the following /8s have been allocated to various registries throughout 2010:

1/8
14/8
27/8
31/8
36/8
42/8
49/8
50/8
101/8
107/8
176/8
177/8
181/8
223/8

If this same rate of registry allocations continues, the IPv4 free pool will be completely exhausted in 2011. Of the 12 /8s that remain, 7 of these will be allocated using the regular process, then the final 5 will be allocated simultaneously across all registries.

Have you started planning for IPv6? If your current provider for hosting, colocation, or other services are coming up for renewal, now is the time to seriously consider switching to a provider that offers native IPv6 so you can start to plan, develop, and test for the future.

Does your provider speak IPv6? Roller Network does.

6to4 Relay Activated

Roller Network has activated a 6to4 relay on one of our border routers.

We have several customers using 6to4 addresses, so instead of relying on public relays for this traffic we will now originate it ourselves. Scanning through the logs and performing a traceroute/ping on several of them revealed working connectivity, but in the event of any trouble with 6to4 addresses, please report it to us.

Global Crossing IPv6 In Service

We are pleased to announce that our native IPv6 connection to Global Crossing is now officially in service. It’s actually been in service since June, but there were a few changes that had to be made before we could make it official.
