DNS-over-TLS and QUIC Support Added

We’ve added support for DNS-over-TLS (DoT) and DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) to our Primary DNS and Secondary DNS services.

DNS-over-TLS uses TCP port 853. It encrypts and wraps DNS queries and answers with the TLS protocol. The goal of the method is to increase user privacy and security by preventing eavesdropping and manipulation of DNS data via man-in-the-middle attacks.

DNS-over-QUIC uses UDP port 853. It has privacy properties similar to DNS over TLS, but uses the QUIC transport protocol. It reduces latency through 0-RTT/1-RTT handshakes, and eliminates head-of-line blocking using UDP.

We are using dnsdist to support new these new query methods on top of standard DNS.

New Account Security Settings Section

Our new Account Security Settings was released today. This new section of the Account Control center allows you to manage your Two-Factor Authentication methods. Currently only the existing YubiKey OTP method is supported, but we’re working on adding Backup Codes and TOTP (Authenticator Apps).

Look for the “Security Settings” link in the My Account menu, or go directly to https://acc.rollernet.us/account/security.php

Future work will also include moving the password change page into the Security Settings section.

Forums Offline

The forums will be offline until further notice due to thousands of “users” trying to run searches and create accounts. The server hardware that runs the forms is unable to handle the load, and since it’s not a critical resource we’re disabling them until it passes.

UPDATE: we had re-enabled the forums, but the traffic flood eventually returned and we were forced to disable them again. We are exploring permanent rate limiting for the forums so they just go offline whenever it runs out of resources since we aren’t concerned about forums uptime.

Weather Radio Upgrade

New streaming encoders that feed our weather radio streaming audio have been installed to improve quality. Most importantly, the Reno WXK58 stream is now a high quality stream.

Tuning uses a NESDR Nano 2+ software defined radio (SDR) connected to a Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ to encode as MP3 and upload to the streaming server. Each stream has a dedicated Pi for its SDR.
