Hosted Mail Outage

One of the servers in an active/standby pair that’s part of our hosted mail service locked up for reasons unknown at this time. The standby didn’t automatically take over so we cut power to the active server to force the standby to promote itself to active. Master ticket ID 2125. We are seeing a successful takeover by the standby at this time and services have been fully restored.

Timeline

[2010-06-09 13:06:04] First soft alert of POP3/IMAP connections refused.

[2010-06-09 13:08:04] Hard outage alert for NOC response.

[2010-06-09 13:13:36] Powered off “active” server in the troubled pair after no login response (SSH and console) and failure of the standby to self-promote.

[2010-06-09 13:14:10] Successful promotion of standby to active. POP3/IMAP connections accepted.

Total outage time for hosted mail boxes on this pair was approximately 8 minutes, 6 seconds.

New: Secondary DNS Multi-Zone Settings

We have just released a multi-zone settings tool to our Secondary DNS service. This allows settings such as master, second master, and AXFR/NOTIFY settings to be applied to multiple (or all) Secondary DNS zones without having to update each zone individually. Zone file maintenance actions (delete and retransfer) must still be performed individually.

This new feature is available on accounts with Personal Plus or higher.

Full Release of New Outbound Mail Features

As we mentioned last week there was a bug preventing us from releasing one of the new features for Outbound Mail. All of the accounts affected by this bug have been contacted and fixed, so we can proceed with the full release on May 22 as promised.

Outbound Mail accounts now feature all of these options:

  • Mail mirroring support for Outbound accounts
  • Mail forwarding (BCC) for Outbound accounts
  • IPv6 access filter to compliment the existing IPv4 filter
  • Option to send 5xx response for common DNS errors instead of 4xx

New: Bulk Entry “Override” Selector

Our blacklist and whitelist filters have a bulk entry mode that attempts to auto detect the entry type based on a defined pattern. However, you may occasionally want to bulk add something as a specific type without using the auto detect engine, so we have added a new “Entry Type” selector.

New "Entry Type" Selector

As you can see in the example above we also added line numbers to the entry field to make it easier to find lines that throw an error. The auto detect override selector was implemented from a customer feature request.
